From a Scientist to a Gladiator: Russel Crowe Cast As Jor – El!

By: Adam Basciano

When modern comic book movies discuss their casting, they often use Superman: The Movie as the template they follow.  Naturally, it’s only fitting that the reboot of the franchise would need to at least match that level of casting genius, if not exceed it.  So far, I feel The Man of Steel has made excellent casting decisions. They’ve followed the formula to perfection.  You have the unknown in Henry Cavill in the title role, surrounded by academy award caliber talent, the likes of which include Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Kevin Costner.  Well, you can add more acting credibility to this already impressive list.  Variety indicates that Warner Brothers, Chris Nolan, and Zack Snyder have cast Russell Crowe as Jor – El. Crowe’s credits include Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, and Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World.  Apparently, Crowe beat out other acting thespians Sean Penn, and Clive Owen for the role.

This is down right brilliant casting.  Marlon Brando left his mark on the role of Jor – El back in 1978.  So much so, that Bryan Singer felt the need to regurgitate his likeness and dialogue in Superman Returns. In order for another actor to assume that role, and make you believe they are Jor – El, you need an actor of substance, and the ability to make the role his own.  Russell Crowe is definitely more than capable.  On paper, the cast that has been assembled for this film, may be the best cast for a comic book based film, alongside Chris Nolan’s Batman films and the aforementioned Richard Donner Superman film.  I know I seem to say this after every casting announcement, but with news like this I can’t help it.  Is it 2012 yet?  Ps: As coincidence would have it, both actors playing Superman’s fathers have also played Robin Hood.
