Will Batman & Superman Finally Unite On Screen For the World’s Finest Film!?

By: Adam Basciano

The fact that a Superman film and a Batman film are currently filming at the exact same time, has this fanboy grinning from ear to ear.  As a result, I’ve begun to wonder how I would feel if my two favourite superheroes shared the same screen in a “World’s Finest” film.  I think that would be the single most epic moment of geek euphoria I could every experience in my life. Well, according to an exclusive scoop from the guys over at Think Mcfly Think, this moment may become a realty.  According to the site, the studio has been secretly developing a Superman/Batman team up project. Of course, this is not the first time the studio flirted with this idea.  It was close to becoming a reality for a Summer 2004 release.  Wolfgang Petersen (Troy) was set to direct from a script by Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven). The project was ultimately scrapped in favour of two separate franchise.  Ultimately, this decision had its pro’s and con’s On the plus side, fans got Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.  On the other hand, we got Bryan Singer’s Superman snore -fest.

Still, the executives over at Warmer Brothers are head over heals for that Batman vs Superman script (as they should be, it’s damn good…trust me!).  The studio even admitted that if Superman Returns wasn’t the mind numbingly boring soap opera it turned out to be, and actually engaged a mass audience we would have seen Batman and Superman on-screen together in the form of Christian Bale and Brandon Routh, for Christmas of 2009.  Apparently, with “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Man of Steel” set for release 2012 and 2013, the studio is keen to revisit the idea of combining these two iconic heroes into one film . ” In a classic case of covering your ass, what we’re hearing is two separate incarnations are being tooled. One version where the World’s Greatest Detective is firmly established and helps mentor an up-and-coming, fresh-faced Supes and vice versa. Essentially, they’re hoping they can woo Christian Bale back into the cape-and-cowl for a fourth time and in case the Oscar-winner tells them, “No thanks, I’m done!”, they’ll go for a new actor altogether. Both versions would feature Henry Cavill’s Last Son of Krypton.”

Of course, the site goes on to mention that none of this is definite as of yet because the studio has interest in a Justice League film.  My only problem with a Justice league film at the moment is, I think both of Warner Brothers idea’s regarding Justice League are moronic.  Either we’ll get a Justice League film without Batman and Superman (that’d be like playing ice hockey without the ice.) Or, we’ll get a film with completely different actors from the solo films, with an entirely different continuity.  To me, a Superman/Batman team up film makes more sense at this point because it would be more economically feasible then Justice League.  Also, aside from Superman and Batman, Warner Brothers has shown they have no clue how to manage the other DC Comics characters. Also, I love the idea of Henry Cavill being brought back as Superman, no matter what incarnation this film takes.  Either you have him and Bale, which maintains film continuity, or you have him and a new Batman, who can then springboard into the solo Batman film franchise post Chris Nolan.  As for the belief that Christian Bale would never do a team up film, I disagree.  Remember Terminator Salvation? That was a steaming pile of bat-dung, yet he still starred in that.  My advice to Warner Brothers, start backing up the money truck into Mr. Bale’s drive way immediately! If this movie comes to fruition, and is as good as it potentially could be, I could happily retire from podcasting and this website, as my superhero film dream would have come true.

  1. Great article Adam but don’t you dare retire from podcasting 😀 just messing.

Personally I would love to see this film with Bale and Cavill, think it could be something extraordinary and maybe even the best comic book film of all-time. I also like the thought of one of them mentoring the other to a degree but I think personally both heroes should learn something from each other. Lets hope it happens with the right script and director.

  2. LOL. Love all the passion! I think a Batman/Superman team up is ideal, forget the justice league for now. They can’t even get the various heroes in their own new TV shows!-Aquaman? sank, Wonder Woman? Nope, and others in the past few years like Birds of prey, didn’t go anywhere. And not many people were taken with the Green Lantern flick. For now they should leave the team-ups to Marvel, who do have a foot in the door when it comes to good superhero flicks through the last decade. But DC has certainly caught up with Batman. I’m in favor of Henry Cavill and a new Batman to restart the Franchise. But I’m just one of those grumpy fans who never feels they cast BM quite right, EVER. Great article!!
