Comic Book Review: Teen Titans #2

By: Sam J. Rizzo

This issue of Teen Titans starts out with Kid Flash in a prison cell thinking about the less than heroic start to his career as a superhero.  From the prison cell at the N.O.W.H.E.R.E. headquarters, we cut to the night before Halloween; Tim Drake (Red Robin) & Cassie Sandsmarks trying to figure out why the N.O.W.H.E.R.E. organization hasn’t attempted to try to capture her again. There is a scene in the book very reminiscent from Superboy #1 in which Templar is telling Red that we need Superboy out there in the field and that the time is now. Superboy believes that by doing these “errands” for the N.O.W.H.E.R.E. organization this will guarantee his freedom. Meanwhile, Tim Drake comes across an internet news video of a young girl named Claudia talking about a new metahuman called Skitter. Tim believes that they need to help her before N.O.W.H.E.R.E. get to her first. Tim confronts Claudia, who he suspects might be this new metahuman but Claudia tells him it is really her sister, Celine that is Skitter. Claudia tells Tim that he isn’t the first person to come around asking about Skitter since starting her blog about the creature. Claudia says that she told some people from the government.  Tim thinks to himself “Oh Crap,” but assures her everything will be alright. Red Robin finds Celine as the creature Skitter and tries to help her in the midst of a fight between the two and a N.O.W.H.E.R.E. agent sent to apprehend the creature. In the end, Cassie (Wonder Girl) saves the day and rescues Robin and Skitter from the N.O.W.H.E.R.E. agent. Robin says to Cassie that they need to stick together and that they need to help the other metahumans by making them aware of this organizations existence. From there we cut back to Kid Flash escaping from his cell, as he runs down the hallway he sees a door with the name Solstice on it. As Kid Flash peaks into the door he sees her screaming out in pain “Please help, me!”

Overall, I think this issue was just okay. I was anticipating a throw down at one point between Cassie and Superboy, in a second attempt to bring her into N.O.W.H.E.R.E. I think that the writers were just trying to wet our appetite so to speak saying that in a future issue that there will be a fight between Superboy and Cassie (Wonder Girl). I liked how Tim Drake is trying to warn all the other metahumans about the existence of N.O.W.H.E.R.E. The scene at the beginning between him and Cassie as they are getting to know one another I thought was funny, when Tim leaves a huge tip on the table and Cassie says to him don’t try to impress me with your money and he says to her it’s not my money anyway, hinting at Bruce Wayne. The art in the book was great, no complaints in that department at all.  I really enjoyed the artwork. My only complaint is that it was just more of the same with Superboy. I was expecting by the end to see N.O.W.H.E.R.E. cut Superboy loose.

Overall Grade: 6/10
