There’s a shakeup on Asgard that will have a ripple effect to the comic book readers of Midgard. “This October, Marvel Comics evolves once again in one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of the “big three” of Captain American, Iron Man and Thor. No longer is the classic Thunder God able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, and a brand new female hero will emerge worthy of the name THOR.” The comic book will be written by Jason Aaron and drawn by Russell Dauterman. Writer Jason Aaron commented on the change by saying; ” This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”
I am absolutely down and onboard with a female character taking up the mantle of Thor. I’m all for progression with superhero characters, especially the ones that have been around for a long time. This is provided of course, that it makes sense story wise. I’m not sure if it is though, as I’m slightly behind on my “Thor: God of Thunder” reading. So, if this change is a story driven decision and is written and drawn well, then I’m excited and will give the book a read. However, given the history of the comic book genre, I’m fearful that this may be nothing more than a money grab that gives the company an excuse to launch a new book, with a brand new #1 issue. Sure it will boost sales, but as with all cash grabs, the change will last less than a year. If that’s the case, it will be a disservice to the character and fans alike. Time will tell. We’ll have to read some of the story to find out.
