Almost two weeks ago, Warner Brothers & DC Entertainment announced a slate of 10 films from the year 2016-2020. Today, Disney & Marvel Studio’s decided to add to the awesomeness by revealing their full slate of Phase 3 films. A total of 9 films between 2016-2019. While the message board brigade and certain internet outlets will perpetuate the stupid DC Vs Marvel fanboy war, I’m simply ecstatic! As a fan of both companies, and the superhero movie genre in general, this is great news! Everybody wins! Lets look at the late.
Recently it was reported that Robert Downey Jr. was in negotiations to co-star in Captain America 3, as Iron-Man, paving the way for a cinematic version of the “Civil War” storyline. Those reports are indeed true. Chris Evan’s Captain America will square off against Robert Downey Jr’s. Iron Man, in “Captain America: Civil War” on May 5 2016. Obviously, the film will not be a panel for panel retelling of the comic book, but that worked fine for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
Also in 2016, specifically November 4, comes “Doctor Strange.” The film, is to be directed by Scott Derrickson. There have been a plethora oc actors associated with the role. However, Deadline indicates that actor Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) is in final negotiations to take on the role.
On May 5th 2017 the studio will release “Guardians of the Galaxy 2”, the sequel to 2014’s highest grossing superhero film. The film has also become Marvel’s third highest grossing film behind only “The Avengers” and “Iron-Man 3”. Director James Gunn and the entire principal cast are all scheduled to return for the next space adventure.
My 34th birthday, July 28th 2017 will see the release of the third Thor standalone film. Titled “Thor: Ragnarök.” In addition to Chris Hemsworth returning as the God of Thunder, Tom Hiddleston will return as Loki. In addition to battling each other, the feuding half-brothers will have to battle the end of everything.
November 3, 2017 will see the release of the often rumored highly anticipated “Black Panther.” T’Challa is a brilliant tactician, strategist, scientist, tracker and a master of all forms of unarmed combat whose unique hybrid fighting style incorporates acrobatics and aspects of animal mimicry. T’Challa being a royal descendent of a warrior race is also a master of armed combat, able to use a variety of weapons but prefers unarmed combat. He is a master planner who always thinks several steps ahead and will go to extreme measures to achieve his goals and protect the kingdom of Wakanda” Actor Chadwick Boseman (42, Get On Up) has been cast in the title role. His first appearance as the character is said to be in “Captain America: Civil War.”
Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been slowly revealing the infinity gems. The Infinity Gems come with an Infinity Guantlet, often worn by Thanos. Part of these elements will likely all be featured in Avengers: “Infinity War”, on May 4 2018. It is rumored that the Avengers sequel will lead to the emergence of a new Avengers roster for this installment. We’ll have to wait and see what unfolds.
Marvel Studio’s will produce their first female lead superhero film with the release of “Captain Marvel” on July 6 2018. “Ms. Marvel’s current powers include flight, enhanced strength, durability and the ability to shoot concussive energy bursts from her hands. Ms. Marvel is a skilled pilot & hand to hand combatant.”
The success of “Guardians of the Galaxy” has given Marvel the confidence to release “Inhumans” on November 2 2018. “At the beginning of the Kree-Skrull War, millions of years ago in Earth time, the alien Kree established a station on the planet Uranus, a strategic position between the Kree and Skrull empires. Through their work at this station, they discovered that sentient life on nearby Earth had genetic potential invested in it by the alien Celestials. Intrigued, the Kree began to experiment on Earth’s then-primitive Homo sapiens by splicing Eternals DNA into Cro-Magnons. Their goal was apparently twofold — to investigate possible ways of circumventing their own evolutionary stagnation, and to create a powerful mutant race of soldiers for use against the Skrulls. However, although their experiments were successful in creating a strain of humanity with extraordinary abilities, the Kree abandoned their experiment for reasons which are not yet clear.Their test subjects, the Inhumans, went on to form a society of their own, which thrived in seclusion from the rest of humanity and developed advanced technology. Experiments with the mutagenic Terrigen Mist gave them various powers, but also caused lasting genetic damage and deformities. This led to a long-term selective breeding program to try to mitigate the effects of these mutations. Their city Attilan has frequently been relocated and, as of 2005 stories, rests in the oxygen-bearing Blue Area of the Moon.
Phase 3 will culminate on May 3 with “Avengers: Infinity War: Part 2” That’s a lot of news in one day. One thing is for sure, it’s a great time to be a superhero movie fan.
