Holy Casting Speculation Batman! Ok, with the release of the 1966 “Batman” television series on Blu-Ray & DVD just days away, I had to go there. With Warner Brothers & DC Entertainment setting up a live action Cinematic Universe, we were bound to see The Joker on film again. It was only a matter of time. Despite the phenomenal performance Heath Ledger gave in “The Dark Knight”, the character is bigger then any actor who plays him. So he should and will appear on film again. It would have been safe to assume that appearance would come in a standalone Batman film, however, according to The Wrap, we could be seeing him a lot sooner.
“Oscar winner Jared Leto is circling a key role in David Ayer‘s “Suicide Squad” that could prove to be The Joker. Ryan Gosling was initially sought to play The Joker but he was unwilling to sign a deal with options for multiple movies, according to one insider. Tom Hardy, Will Smith and Margot Robbie are in various stages of discussions to star in “Suicide Squad.” Jesse Eisenberg is also expected to reprise his role as Superman’s mortal foe Lex Luthor, though no casting is confirmed at this time.” First off, Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Fight Club, American Psycho) is a phenomenal actor, and definitely has the ability to make the role of The Joker uniquely his own. Second of all, I’m so glad Ryan Gosling passed on the role. I’m just not fond of him as an actor personally. Including The Joker in “Suicide Squad”, instantly raises the marketability of this film. In fact, potentially having the two most famous villains in the DC Comics library in one film, makes “Suicide Squad” a must see for hard-core comic book readers and general film going audiences.
