On American Thanksgiving the geek world was rocked with an 88 second teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.  The trailer offers quick cut glimpses of new cast members, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Oscar Isaac. We also get franchise staples such as Storm Troopers, a beat up R2D2, who looks to have been fused with a soccer ball, X-Wing Starfighters, an ominously cloaked individual with a light saber, and the Millennium Falcon.  All this is bookended by a creepy voiceover by Andy Serkis, and the John Williams theme. I could give a far more detailed description, but just watch it again for the 1000’th time. You know you want to…

My opinion on the teaser trailer. is that it does exactly what it’s supposed to… tease! It’s short, offers a good mix of nostalgia and what’s new.  It leaves you with many questions and wanting more.  Some fans were let down at the lack of presence from original cast members Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher. But really, we know they are there, and will get plenty more of them in future trailers, posters and imagery. Remember, as of this writing, the film is still 11 months away.  We are going to get hit with a onslaught of promotional material in that time frame. Other fans complained and debated the logical validity of a cross guard light saber.  Personally, I think it would help from getting your hand sliced off and it looks pretty cool. One feeling I did get from the trailer is a feeling of authenticity. Everything felt more real. The CGI is used as enhancements, to props and locals.  While the effects in Episodes I-III looked good for the most part, there was an over reliance of CGI, to the point where at times it felt like watching cut scenes from a video game. I’m definitely a fan of JJ going back to more practical effects.  Buckle your seatbelts because were entering a whole new era of Star Wars, and I for one think it’s going to be great.
