Green Lantern was not a terrible film, despite the fact that critics and fandom treat it like the second coming of Batman & Robin, Was it perfect….Hell no. It had several execution problems, and had too many cooks in the kitchen as the saying goes. Me personally, I enjoyed Green Lantern more then both Thor feature films combined. Call me a DC homer all you want. Frankly, I don’t care whether anyone agrees with my assessment or not! One of my main problem with the film was that it was too Earth bound. Green Lantern is Superman meets Star Wars, and the film makers didn’t grasp that. Despite under-performing at the box office, I’ve long felt the character deserved another chance. Thankfully, Warner Brothers agrees.
The Emerald Knight will appear in one, if not both of the Justice League films before patrolling Sector 2814 in his own film in Summer 2020. The question is, which Green Lantern will appear? Will the studio turn to Hal Jordan again, or will they select, Guy Gardiner, Kyle Rayner, or John Stewart to protect the universe? While I’d be fine with any one, it may be wise for the studio to go with John Stewart. He is the one most mainstream audiences are familiar with through the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated series. If they do go with John Stewart, there’s an actor who is very interested. Tyrese Gibson, one of the stars of the Transformers and Fast and the Furious franchises. This weekend the actor/singer took to social media, actively campaigning for the role. He posted manipulated images of him as Green Lantern. One image came with the caption. “rumor has it”, while the other recited the Green Lantern Oath. Is this a case of the actor campaigning for the role, or is he hinting that he has the role? Vin Diesel and The Rock did the same with their roles in Guardians of the Galaxy and Shazam respectively. Will it work for Tyrese? Time will tell. He certainly has experience in action heavy, special effects driven films. He’s played a military man, has a certain level of box office clout, and has a likeability about him.
