Dark and gritty are two words I’d never think to use when discussing the Power Rangers. As a fan of the original material, I have wondered what a darker more serious take on the material would look like. Well, there’s no need to wonder any longer. Filmmaker Joseph Khan has made a 14 minute fan film that puts the original Power Rangers crew in a post apocalyptic setting, in the midst of a war they are clearly losing. None of the original cast is featured, but there is star power in the form of Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) as Kimberly Hart, the Pink Ranger. The result is a sleek, fast paced, violent sci-fi film. The piece honours the history and legacy of the original franchise, but takes it in a direction the actual custodians of the franchise never will. I understand that an actual Power Rangers feature film could never, and should never go this violent, but I believe there is a middle ground that can appeal to children currently watching the tv series, and those that loved the original series, but have grown into adults.
