Suicide Squad Soars Beyond $600 Million At Worldwide Box Office!

By Adam Basciano

In it’s 4th weekend of release, Suicide Squad slipped to #2 at the North American Box office, after being dethroned by Don’t Breath.  However, DC Films fans can breathe easy, because Suicide Squad made $12,110,000 on the homefront this weekend. When added together with it’s previous total, the film has totalled $282,882,627 in the United States and Canada. The film is expected to pass Man of Steel’s domestic total, after next weekend.  Internationally, this weekend alone saw Suicide Squad collect another 19.6 Million. Added with it’s previous international totals, Suicide Squad has now earned $353,100,000 in foreign markets.  Worldwide Suicide Squad has now accumulated a total of $635,982,627. That total has seen Suicide Squad shoot down and surpass both Iron-Man & Iron-Man 2. If you still haven’t seen the film, see it now, then check back here next weekend for updated numbers!

Suicide Squad Completes the Hat Tick At Top Of Box Office!

By: Adam Basciano

Suicide Squad 10

Suicide Squad has done what Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and even Captain America: Civil War couldn’t do; keep first place at the North American box office for 3 consecutive weekends.  Despite three new wide releases vying to overtake it, Suicide Squad brought in another $20,855,401. That is a 52.1% decline from last weekends results and marks one of the smallest third weekend drops for comic book releases in 2016. With this weekends domestic figure included, Deadshot and his villainous friends have targeted $262,428,736. That total means the third entry in the DC Films era has surpassed X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, both The Amazing Spider-Man Films, The Incredibles, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Batman (1989).  Internationally, Suicide Squad took in an additional $38 Million. Germany was the main new territory to open the film this weekend, with Japan set for a Sept 10th bow. To this point, Amanda Waller’s team of misfits has collected 313,000,000. That marks a spectacular 575,428,736 worldwide total in 17 days.

BW _ Don't Believe Everything You Hear

Regarding this years previous DC Films release, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice has been available on home video for a month now. In that time, Warner’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” remained at No. 1 on NPD VideoScan’s overall disc sales chart for the fourth consecutive week, with “Batman: The Killing Joke,” from Warner Bros. Animation, the 26th film in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series, remaining at No. 2 for the second week. The two films also finished in the same positions on the Blu-ray Disc-only chart, a reversal of the prior week, when “Batman: The Killing Joke” debuted at No. 1.”  All I can say, is that’s pretty impressive for a film that certain websites continually insist has been rebuked and isn’t liked by most of the general public. Seems like the cold hard facts actually point to the contrary.  In regards to the negative rhetoric you read about Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, especially from those click bate articles and websites; “Don’t believe everything you hear, son.”

Suicide Squad Shoots Down Competition To Remain #1 At Worldwide Box Office!

By Adam Basciano

Harley Quinn shoots with her bat

During the week, Suicide Squad continually set box office records for the month of August. The box office success continued Friday-Sunday, as the villain team up film collected $43,770,000. That is also a second weekend August record, giving Harley Quinn and her skwad a domestic total of $222,874,728. That domestic total sees Suicide Squad pass the lifetime domestic grosses of such Marvel films as, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Ant-Man, X-Men, X2: X-Men United, Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, X-Men: First Class, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, and X-Men: Apocalypse. In terms of its DC family, Suicide Squad has already surpassed the lifetime grosses of Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Batman Begins, all four Christopher Reeve Superman films, Superman Returns, Watchman and Green Lantern. Yes, Suicide Squad saw a domestic drop of  67.3% from weekend one to weekend two, but given it’s massive opening, competition from Sausage Party, which over achieved at the box office, Pete’s Dragon and the Rio Olympics, such a drop was to be expected.

DC Films 2 Billion

Internationally, the film also held onto the #1 spot to the tune of 58.7 Million. The film has already topped the lifetime international gross of Guardians of the Galaxy in many offshore markets. It is even outpacing or running just behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  It’s top new markets were Argentina and Italy, where it debuted in top spot and is heavily outpacing Guardians of the Galaxy and even Deadpool. When adding in this weekends foreign results Suicide Squad has ammased $242,500,000. That brings the films worldwide total to an impressive $465,374,728 in merely 12 days. There are some websites and clickbate articles that will tell you that there is no buzz or interest for DC Films. These websites will insist that DC Films are doomed, and will never compete or compare with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. None of these claims are factual. Sure, DC Films have made some mistakes, and would love better critical reception. They have taken steps to correct their errors and to be more critically appealing. This occurred in the form of the appointment of Geoff Johns and Jon Berg to lead DC Films. Their influence starts in earnest with the release of Wonder Woman. However, make no mistake, there is interest in DC Films and they are holding their own compared with Marvel Studios. For comparison, The first 3 Marvel Cimematic Universe films, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Iron-Man 2 collected a worldwide total of $1.472 Billion. Meanwhile, DC Films first 3 entries into its shared cinematic universe; Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad have gathered a worldwide total of just over $2Billion and counting, with Suicide Squad still early in its theatrical run. DC Films is off to a fine start, with bigger and better still to come!

Suicide Squad Is The #1 Movie In The World + Superman Sequel In Active Development!

By: Adam Basciano

Suicide Squad #1 Movie

This past weekend saw the debut of Suicide Squad around the world. In both North America and abroad, Suicide Squad set the record as the largest grossing opening weekend in the month of August ever. It easily bested previous record holder, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy.” In the U.S. & Canada, Amanda Waller and her Task Force X collected a staggering $133,682,248. When you factor in foreign markets, Suicide Squad made an additional 133,300,000 oversees. That means Deadshot, Harley Quinn and the rest of the crew, ran away with a worldwide total of $266,982,248 in just 3 days of release. In addition to besting a Disney/Marvel property, it also beat the domestic and worldwide debut of Fox/Marvel X-Men spinoff, Deadpool.  It’s worth noting that audience members consisted of 54% male and 46% female. That is a higher percentage of female viewership then is typical for the superhero genre. The film also saw increased viewership amongst the African-American and Latino communities. Also of note, is the fact that the newly minted DC Films brand and it’s 3 films to date, is the only franchise where the films all had $100 Million+ opening weekends.

Solo Superman

Speaking of DC Films, the film that started it all was 2013’s Man of Steel. Given that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was thought of as the defacto sequel to Man of Steel, fans wondered if Superman would ever get another stand alone feature film. Especially since no such film was part of the currently announced slate. Well, fret not Superman fans, Henry Cavill will take flight and headline his own film once again! The Wrap has exclusively learned that; “Superman is a top priority for the studio and getting the character right for audiences is of tantamount importance. The “Man of Steel” sequel is a long way from getting a release date. A standalone “Batman” film does not yet have a date, but will likely come before the Superman sequel, the person familiar with the project said. Warner Bros. has two untitled DC films to be released on Oct. 5, 2018 and Nov. 1, 2019, but hasn’t said what they will be.” I’d place a good bet that we’ll see the Batman and Superman solo films occupy those two dates.

Fom Teen Wolf To Man of Steel! Supergirl Finds Its Superman!

By: Adam Basciano

Shortly after learning that Supergirl’s cousin Kal-El and his superhero alter ego would join the show, the producers have revealed our new Superman….and thank sweet baby Jesus….it’s NOT Tom Welling! ““Teen Wolf” alum Tyler Hoechlin has been cast as Superman/Clark Kent in Season 2 of the Greg Berlanti-produced drama, which is making the jump from CBS to The CW for its sophomore outing.” In addition to Teen Wolf, he’s been in Road to Perdition, and Hall Pass. More recently, the 28 year old starred in the film Everybody Wants Some. Executive Producer  Andrew Kreisberg had these comments about the casting;  “Greg and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.” I’ve never seen “Teen Wolf” or any of Tyler Hoechlin’s work. He’s got a great look and resemblance to the character. The bottom line is that I trust the casting agents and producers, as they have cast Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and of course, Supergirl. They haven’t let me down yet, and I don’t suspect they will with this choice.  I’m excited. The next big reveal will be seeing the TV series’ iteration, of the costume and seeing the actor as Clark Kent and Superman!

Superman To Appear On Supergirl Season 2…For Real + The Flash Hires A “Dope” Director!

By: Adam Basciano

Superman costume in Fortress

Supergirl has been renewed for a second season, but the show will no longer air on CBS. Instead, the show will shift over to The CW this fall, joining its DC Comics brethren Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legend’s of Tomorrow. Furthermore, Supergirl will be part of a 4 night crossover with all of those shows. However, the exciting news doesn’t stop there. Remember all those Superman mentions and references in Season 1? Everything from name drops to text messages, and even seeing his shadow? You remember those.  Well, those Superman c**k teases as I call them, end in season two! Why you ask? Well, The Man of Steel will finally appear in person and in the flesh to interact with his Kryptonian cousin. “The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the former CBS series will introduce the iconic DC Comics superhero when it moves to The CW in the fall. Superman will first be seen visiting his cousin Kara (Melissa Benoist) in National City at the beginning of the series’ second season. The role is currently being cast.” Obviously, Superman won’t be played by current big screen Kal-El, Henry Cavill. That ship long sailed, when WB decided to keep their film universe and movie universe separate. A wise move, in my opinion.  Smallville fanatics should hold their horses as well, because it’s unlikely that Tom Welling will reprise his Clark Kent role from over a decade ago. He was never too keen on playing Superman on his own show anyway. Besides. the role is being described as currently being cast. I don’t think the producers would screen test Welling. They know what he brings to the table. Also, it’s not like he’s busy. I mean he hasn’t done anything relevant acting wise, since Smallville ended its run. Speaking of Supergirl’s producers, they had this to say; “Greg [Berlanti], Ali [Adler] and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said. “Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!”

Over on the DC Films side of the universe, the film starring Ezra Miller as the fastest man alive, has found someone to steer him in the right direction.  “Warner Brothers has found its director for its feature The Flash starring Ezra Miller. The studio has chosen Rick Famuyiwa, the up-and-coming director who on the feature front most recently helmed the Sundance pic Dope, which he scripted. He will step in and direct the film that Warner Bros has slotted for release on March 16, 2018. Warner Bros is looking for the right chemical mix on its superhero picture line based on the DC Comics heroes that started with Batman V Superman, and the feeling internally was that Famuyiwa provided a vision that would resonate with young viewers and that vision was very compatible with the script that the studio is moving toward the starting gate with.” I didn’t see Dope, but friends of mine who have said it was great, so I’ll take their word for it.  Any time you can get a director who has critical acclaim, it’s a great step in the right direction for your film. So in the case of The Flash, he’s off to a running start.

Booster Gold & A Harley Quinn Lead All Female Film Join DCEU Slate!

By: Adam Basciano

Booster Gold

With the exception of Arrow, which has “shit the bed” this season with horrendous story telling, horrid decision making, and a idiotic villain, the DC Television Universe led by Greg Berlanti has been phenomenal.   The Flash has defied the odds, and gotten even better, while Supergirl and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow have been so fun and entertaining. The success and quality of these shows, has many fans wanting Greg Berlanti involved on the movie side of things. While he won’t become the Kevin Feige of the DCEU, Berlanti will in fact make the jump to film.  “I’m attached to a few films [at Warner Bros.] now, and one, Booster Gold, is a DC property. Zack Stentz, who wrote an episode of Flash last year, just got the job, so he’s writing the script now. I’d probably direct that, or I would want to.” If Booster Gold maintains a similar tone to what Berlanti is doing on the TV side of things, I think it could be a fun and entertaining film. For those scoffing and suggesting Booster Gold can’t work as a film, I call BULL$#^+ on your claim. We live in a world where a hero as ludicrous as Ant-Man can make $500+ million at the worldwide box office. If that can be profitable, anything can, if handled correctly. As for writer Zack Stentz, he’s a co-writer of the first Thor film, X-Men: First Class, and the Power Rangers reboot.

Harley Quinn -lifs top!

Suicide Squad hasn’t even been released yet, and I’m already in love with Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Warner Brothers must feel the same way because according to the Hollywood Reporter; “Margot Robbie, who stars as the villainess in Suicide Squad, is attached to reprise the character and would also produce the untitled spinoff, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. But in an interesting twist, the project is not a Quinn solo movie. Rather, it would focus on several of DC’s female heroes and villains.Details are being closely guarded but names such as Batgirl and Birds of Prey have surfaced, although in what capacity, it’s not clear. Warner Bros. isn’t commenting. There is also a scribe penning the script but those details, too, are being kept secret, although it is known that the writer is female.” According to the report, the actress has fallen in love with the character, and brought the idea and writer to the studio. This is music to my ears, is a smart idea, and would make Warner Brothers  the leader in female lead superhero films. Marvel has yet to announce a star or director for its Captain Marvel adaptation, while Kevin Feige continues to make half hearted statements regarding a Black Widow solo film that never actually come to fruition or amount to anything. I’m hoping this film includes The Birds of Prey along with Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Catwoman, as those are some of my favourite female DC characters.

Doctor Strange Teaser Trailer + Spider -Man Gets A Title and Logo!

By: Adam Basciano

Doctor Strange Poster

The first Marvel Cinematic Universe film of this year, drops on May 6, 2016. Of course, that film is Captain America: Civil War. I can’t wait to see it, and for anyone wondering, I’m #TeamIronMan!  I mean he’s Iron-Man! He’s been with every Maxim Model for an entire calendar year! If that isn’t a hero to look up to, I don’t know who is! He’s also got Vision, Black Panther, and Spider-Man on his team! What’s the 90 year old virgin Captain America bringing to the table. Aside from eye candy and cleavage galore in the form of Black Widow, he’s got his buddy “Sucky Bucky”, and the Olsen sister nobody cares about! In all seriousness, all these characters are great, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier is my favourite Marvel film. I’m super excited for the film. After Civil War though, comes Doctor Strange in November. The first teaser trailer dropped, and I’m really intrigued.  There’s some “Inception” level shenanigans happening. Throw in some “Fringe”, “Batman Begins” and “The Matrix” style moments for good measure. I know nothing about Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme, but the trailer made me want to seek out the comic books. I’m a fan of actor Benedict Cumberbatch, so all this combined, and I am so on board this film.

At Cinema Con, Sony revealed the title and logo for their Marvel creatively controlled Spider Man film. Peter Parker and his alter ego will first appear in the aforementioned, Captain America: Civil War.  Tom Holland will spin the webs and wear the iconic costume. After that, he will swing into his own franchise. His first solo film will be titled “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” My thoughts on the title are mixed. On one hand, it’s appropriate as it infers the characters youth and high school years. It is also the title of a Spider-Man comic book story, when Venom first appeared. Also, it has a double meaning as this is the characters homecoming into the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper. On the other hand, it’s a clunky title, that doesn’t have much pop! I’d have proffered The Spectacular Spider-Man myself. The font of the title leaves me torn as well. I appreciate that it calls to mind the font of various Spider-Man animated logo’s, but I also, dislike it, because it looks too much like an animated series logo. Regardless, all reports indicate that Tom Holland is a scene stealer in Civil War. If that’s true, my excitement for Spider-Man: Homecoming will increase even further.
