During the week, Suicide Squad continually set box office records for the month of August. The box office success continued Friday-Sunday, as the villain team up film collected $43,770,000. That is also a second weekend August record, giving Harley Quinn and her skwad a domestic total of $222,874,728. That domestic total sees Suicide Squad pass the lifetime domestic grosses of such Marvel films as, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Ant-Man, X-Men, X2: X-Men United, Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, X-Men: First Class, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, and X-Men: Apocalypse. In terms of its DC family, Suicide Squad has already surpassed the lifetime grosses of Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Batman Begins, all four Christopher Reeve Superman films, Superman Returns, Watchman and Green Lantern. Yes, Suicide Squad saw a domestic drop of 67.3% from weekend one to weekend two, but given it’s massive opening, competition from Sausage Party, which over achieved at the box office, Pete’s Dragon and the Rio Olympics, such a drop was to be expected.
Internationally, the film also held onto the #1 spot to the tune of 58.7 Million. The film has already topped the lifetime international gross of Guardians of the Galaxy in many offshore markets. It is even outpacing or running just behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It’s top new markets were Argentina and Italy, where it debuted in top spot and is heavily outpacing Guardians of the Galaxy and even Deadpool. When adding in this weekends foreign results Suicide Squad has ammased $242,500,000. That brings the films worldwide total to an impressive $465,374,728 in merely 12 days. There are some websites and clickbate articles that will tell you that there is no buzz or interest for DC Films. These websites will insist that DC Films are doomed, and will never compete or compare with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. None of these claims are factual. Sure, DC Films have made some mistakes, and would love better critical reception. They have taken steps to correct their errors and to be more critically appealing. This occurred in the form of the appointment of Geoff Johns and Jon Berg to lead DC Films. Their influence starts in earnest with the release of Wonder Woman. However, make no mistake, there is interest in DC Films and they are holding their own compared with Marvel Studios. For comparison, The first 3 Marvel Cimematic Universe films, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Iron-Man 2 collected a worldwide total of $1.472 Billion. Meanwhile, DC Films first 3 entries into its shared cinematic universe; Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad have gathered a worldwide total of just over $2Billion and counting, with Suicide Squad still early in its theatrical run. DC Films is off to a fine start, with bigger and better still to come!
